Frank Perez Obituary, NEW ORLEANS, La. — Francisco “Frank” Earl Perez, a New Orleans historian, writer, LGBTQ+ advocate and passionate French Quarter preservationist, has died in 2026 after years of dedicating his work to documenting and preserving the cultural history of the city.
Perez, who described himself as a “French Quarter aficionado,” devoted much of his life to telling the stories that shaped New Orleans. In his writing, he captured the unique character of the historic neighborhood, once writing, “There really is no other neighborhood in the world quite like the Quarter.”
His work extended beyond writing and research. Perez was deeply involved in preserving LGBTQ+ history through the LGBT+ Archives Project of Louisiana and played an important role in documenting stories and collections that might otherwise have been overlooked. His efforts also included training tour guides and helping create connections between people and organizations across New Orleans.
The Amistad Research Center remembered Perez as a beloved friend, activist and historian, highlighting his instrumental role in its acquisition of LGBTQ+ collections. The organization also praised his professionalism, his passion for New Orleans and the friendship he shared with members of the center.
Perez’s influence was also remembered by those who worked with him in public life. Helena Moreno, who got to know Perez during her time on the New Orleans City Council, said she appreciated his friendship, advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community and dedication to preserving the city’s history. She described him as someone who cared deeply about New Orleans and extended condolences to his family, friends and those who loved him.
Save Our Cemeteries also expressed sorrow over Perez’s passing, remembering his work researching, documenting and presenting LGBTQ+ history. The organization noted that Perez had previously served as a board member and said his contributions had left a lasting impact on New Orleans and its community.
Perez’s funeral is scheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at Schoen Funeral Home on Canal Street, according to the information provided. A separate celebration of life is expected to be held in the French Quarter in the near future.
