Jake Whisenant Accident – Obituary, MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif. — Jake Whisenant, a 30-year-old Mammoth Lakes climber known for his accomplishments on Yosemite’s El Capitan, has died following an accident in the Sierra Nevada. The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office Coroner recorded his date of death as Aug. 3, 2026.

Whisenant was an accomplished climber who gained widespread attention in October 2024 alongside South Lake Tahoe climber Brant Hysell. The pair completed Lurking Fear, a big-wall climbing route on Yosemite’s El Capitan, in 2 hours, 55 minutes and 32 seconds. Gripped reported that their ascent broke a speed record previously held by Yuji Hirayama and Nick Fowler.
The achievement followed another ascent of the same route by Whisenant and Hysell two days earlier, when they completed it in just over four hours. Their performances helped establish Whisenant as a notable figure within the Yosemite climbing community.
Whisenant remained active in the area’s climbing community in the months before his death. In May 2026, the Yosemite Climbing Association reported that Whisenant and Noah Fox climbed the Nose on El Capitan twice in one day, completing the demanding effort in 14 hours and 38 minutes.
